Choosing the right rubber is most of the engineering

Nearly every failed component we are sent back was the wrong compound rather than the wrong shape. This is the working guide we use internally — including what each material is genuinely bad at.

General-purpose grades. A specific compound can be pushed beyond these ratings — if your duty sits on a boundary, call us before you specify.

The eight compounds in detail

Nitrile (NBR)

−30 °C to +110 °C

The workhorse oil-resistant elastomer. Excellent resistance to petroleum oils, hydraulic fluids, greases and diesel, with good abrasion and compression-set behaviour at a modest cost.

Watch out

Poor resistance to ozone, weathering and strong acids. Not suitable for brake fluid, ketones or continuous sunlight exposure — specify EPDM instead.

EPDM

−45 °C to +140 °C

The choice wherever water, steam, weather or ozone are involved. EPDM ages outdoors almost indefinitely and handles hot water and low-pressure steam that would destroy nitrile.

Watch out

Swells badly in petroleum oils and fuels. Never use EPDM on a mineral-oil duty.

Silicone (VMQ)

−60 °C to +230 °C

The widest service temperature range of any common elastomer, plus physiological inertness. Used where parts must survive an oven cycle or stay flexible in deep cold.

Watch out

Low tear and abrasion strength — avoid on dynamic, sliding or high-wear duties. Attacked by steam above 120 °C.

Viton (FKM)

−20 °C to +230 °C

The premium fluoroelastomer for aggressive chemicals and sustained high heat. Specified where a nitrile part is failing early and downtime costs more than the seal.

Watch out

Significantly more expensive than NBR and poor below −20 °C. Not suitable for hot water, steam, ketones or amines.

Neoprene (CR)

−35 °C to +120 °C

The balanced all-rounder. Moderate oil resistance combined with genuine weather resistance and inherent flame retardance — no other single compound covers that spread as cheaply.

Watch out

Beaten by NBR on oil and by EPDM on weather. Choose it when you genuinely need both, not as a default.

Natural Rubber

−50 °C to +80 °C

Unmatched resilience, tear strength and dynamic fatigue life. Still the correct choice for shock and vibration work wherever oil is not present.

Watch out

Swells in oil and degrades in sunlight and ozone. Restricted to about 80 °C.

PTFE / Teflon

−200 °C to +260 °C

Not an elastomer but a fluoropolymer, used as a bonded facing over a rubber backing. It gives a chemically inert working face while the rubber underneath supplies the flex.

Watch out

Cannot flex repeatedly on its own — it has to be backed by rubber, which is exactly how our PTFE-faced diaphragms are built.

Polyurethane

−30 °C to +80 °C

Exceptional abrasion resistance and load capacity — several times the wear life of conventional rubber on sliding or impact duty.

Watch out

Hydrolyses in hot water and steam, and is limited to around 80 °C. Not for wet heat.
